CHARLIE (HAILEY) JESSICA-ANN THERENS
December 15th, 1994 – October 11th, 2025
It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved daughter, Charlie (Hailey) Jessica-Ann Therens, on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. She was only 30 years old.
Charlie was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, to Cynthia Smith (Simoneau) and Steven Therens. From her earliest days, she was an old soul, enamoured with music and dancing, and known for her deep, thoughtful conversations. This lifelong love of music began with piano and singing in Music for Young Children, flourished as she played the trumpet in school bands, and became a defining force in her life. Charlie possessed a rare and natural talent; she could pick up any instrument and play it beautifully. Her voice was unique and unforgettable.
Charlie attended St. Mary’s Elementary, where she created some lasting friendships. Charlie danced with Dance Images from age 4 to 14, and she excelled in musical theatre. A graduate of Vanier Collegiate with honours, Charlie shone in musicals, choir, and band. She carried her bright spirit into her professional life, working for Bell for many years and even serving as a manager. With characteristic determination, she later packed a truck with her two beloved cats, Link and Zoey, and moved to Calgary to experience big city life. She continued to work for many phone companies, eventually pursuing a career in childcare.
For the last five years, Charlie dedicated herself to her work with children. She completed her Early Childhood Education Level One and had found her perfect place at Heartland Agency, where she connected deeply with staff and students — especially because the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children had special needs. Her colleagues were blown away by her musical talent, which she shared freely, singing and playing guitar with the children. Charlie’s voice was mesmerizing, and she performed many concerts as an adult, often sharing her own original songs. She loved busking, creating collages, nature, animals, and crafting special evenings with her countless friends. Charlie loved walking in Calgary; she loved the freedom of the C-train and being able to explore new places in the city.
Even while navigating mental health challenges from her teens onward, Charlie remained a sparkle of light in everyone’s lives. She was always giving advice and helping others, a truth beautifully reflected in her final Facebook post about helping strangers. She had an infectious laugh that will be profoundly missed. Anyone who has met Charlie will always remember her.
Charlie shared a special bond with her mother, Cindy, her first-born daughter, with whom she shared long conversations about plants, cooking, and life. Charlie always made an effort to come home and visit her family — or vice versa, visiting her in Calgary. Many visits were filled with laughter. She was a devoted and loving big sister to Emma, her best friend and musical partner. Charlie and Emma had a special bond because they were raised together by their mother. She also cherished her other half-sisters, Jada, Thea, and Suri (stepmother Mel), with whom she shared many great times. Charlie’s father, Steven, with whom she shared many traits, loved her immensely. They enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, and biking together. A gifted cook, Charlie inherited her father’s love for the kitchen, creating amazing gluten-free and lactose-free dishes.
Charlie is survived by her parents, Cindy Smith (Mark Smith) and Steven Therens; sisters: Emma Therens (Quinn Schwabe), Jada Therens (Hayden Hudyma), Thea Therens, and Suri Therens; aunts and uncles: Alain Simoneau (Angela) and cousin Neva Simoneau, Jahson Simoneau (Jessica) and cousin Lily Simoneau, Mike Therens (Virgginia) and cousins Mitchell Shephard (Kianis Shephard), Peter Therens, and Madison Therens, and Michelle Hrechka (Chad) and cousins Alec Hrechka (Katrina Bacon) and Andrew Hrechka; grandmother, Doris McEwen; grandfather, Jean Simoneau; grandfather, Wayne Therens (Carol-Ann); many cousins; and her two adored fur babies, Link and Zoey; as well as many friends who were her second family. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Bob McEwen; grandmother, Raymonde Therens; and her best friend, Nikkita Kaiswatum.
A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held on Friday, November 7th, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Our Lady Community Center, 566 Vaughn St. W, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. A buffet style supper will be served following the service.
In the words of her cousin, Neva Simoneau:
Charlie is the sun, the wind, the rain,
She is in the air you breathe every day,
Charlie will always be in your heart,
Listen to her sing a song of hope and cheer…
You’ll see her in the clouds above you,
Charlie whispers words of love, you’ll meet again,
Until then listen to her songs.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Wakamow Valley Authority Office, 276 Home St E, north end of the Sportsman Hall, or e-transfers can be sent to wakamow.gm@sasktel.net. Please ensure that Charlie’s name is included and also ensure the answer to the security question is Wakamow. Charlie loved Wakamow and many cherished memories were made there.
Though her time with us was far too short, Charlie’s song of love, resilience, and light will echo in our hearts forever.
Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Andrew Pratt, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
