Roy Lyndon Peterson

On Saturday, January 31st, 2026, Roy Lyndon Peterson passed away unexpectedly at home in Mortlach, SK.  Born on August 13th, 1956 to Alvin and Elaine Peterson of Tompkins, SK, Roy grew up on the family farm outside of town as the older brother to Jerry and Tim.

A social butterfly with a keen interest in mechanics, Roy was the quintessential car guy with a fondness for Dodge Challengers but respect for anything with an engine.  He grew up on rock bands like The Guess Who, Trooper, and Heart, frequently reminiscing about seeing them play in Swift Current for a handful of dollars before they hit the mainstream.  After graduating high school, Roy tried everything from farming, machine assembly, bartending, working in the mines, on the rigs, and even taking flying lessons before he eventually found his career path as a class 1A driver.

In the mid-1980s Roy met and fell in love with Cheryl (née: Olson) of Pennant, SK, whom he would marry on March 22nd, 1988.  Daughters Megan and Melanie would soon follow and by 1992 the couple had settled down in Mortlach to raise their family in a small-town setting, similar to the ones experienced in their own youth.  Though work would take Roy hundreds of kilometres from home at times, Mortlach remained his home base for the rest of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alvin and Elaine Peterson, as well as in-laws, Edward and Violet Olson.  Roy is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughters, Megan Peterson and Melanie Peterson; brothers, Jerry (Dawnette) Peterson and Tim (Tanya) Peterson; sister-in-law, Caralee (Wayne) Laturnus; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

The family would also like to extend its sincerest thanks to the local first responders, EMTs, police officers and all those who attended the home on the night of Roy’s passing.  Your efforts and steady presence helped us all in our time of need.  Thank you.

A celebration of Roy’s life will be announced at a later date, tentatively in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, those so wishing may make a donation in Roy’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Box 2414, Toronto, ON M4P 1E4.  Alternatively, any donations to the family’s home renovation fund would be much appreciated as Roy left several projects unfinished.  Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane.  Michelle Ellis, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
