Dennis Roger Goodnough

Dennis Roger Goodnough, born on September 9th, 1937, passed away at age 88 on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, in Moose Jaw, SK.

Dennis was a man who was greatly loved, and for good reason.  He touched people.  His was a life of addition with no subtraction.  He understood true worth and value like no other and was uncompromising in its application.  He was committed to leaving every interaction he encountered better off for his participation.  Whether it be a person, a farm field, a piece of machinery, or a pet or working animal.  It did not matter.  If you were lucky enough to know Dennis, you became a better person, fields were cleaner, machinery worked better, animals were better behaved.  He multiplied his worth in unimaginable and incalculable ways.  He was a man of deep faith in God, and he made a conscience effort to have God’s love shine through him in his actions and accomplishments.  The world has lost a unique and precious soul with his death but was fortunate to have gained so much from his life.

From oil rigs to police service, to farming and ranching, he lived a diverse and full life.  His greatest love was family.  He engaged in real and meaningful ways with each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He knew them and they knew him.  Always excited about the next year, the next challenge, he infected all of us with his pioneering spirit but left the direction for each to discover.  This was his greatest achievement.  He comes from a long line of pioneers.  From the family patriarch, Thomas Goodenowe, who left England in 1638 to emigrate to Sudbury, Massachusetts, to his grandfather, Frank Goodnough who was born in New York state in 1855 and moved westward, building a farm in Iowa and then in Minnesota until finally scouting out the Moose Jaw area in 1909.  In 1910, he brought his wife Angie and his young family up from Minnesota and the Goodnough’s sunk deep roots in Saskatchewan.  The youngest of that young family was Arthur, aged 14, who would eventually marry Katharina (Katherine) Letkeman and together they raised a large family of industrious children, including Dennis.  The sixth generation is now old enough to be teaching school, so generation seven is not far away.

He was predeceased by his parents; siblings: Ron, Floyd, Muriel, Julia, Vera, Edward, and Robert; and is survived by his siblings: Ted, Gale, Richard, Linda, and Stan; and brother-in-law, Ralph.  Dennis was predeceased by his first wife, Harlene; and is survived by all five of their children: Wendy, Jana (Gary), Jeff (Beth), Dayan (Katarina), and Jason.  The list of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren is extensive.

The Moose Jaw Goodnough (Goodenowe) family invites all Goodnoughs (of various spellings and marital derivations) and friends from far and wide to join them for a Celebration of Dennis’ Life and 115 years of Goodnoughs in Saskatchewan.  If you have a Dennis story or a historical Goodnough Saskatchewan story to share, please email dennisgoodnoughcelebration@drgoodenowe.com.  Both video and written stories will be accepted.

Bettie, Allun Tara, Lisa and Ron, Sincerest condolences on the loss of Dennis! I will miss visiting with him as it was always a good conversation and you came away learning something new. I will also miss that great big smile, as in the almost 40 years of having the pleasure of knowing him, I do not remember ever seeing a frown on his face. He was a gem of a man and will be missed! Al, know that even though you could not get him in the combine this year, he will be there watching over you and Haylee, and I am sure he is putting in a good word with the man upstairs to give you some good harvest weather!

    Kevin and Christy.

I had the honour of meeting and visiting with Dennis and Bettie a few times. His love for his family was evident, and he was a devoted husband to Bettie.
Deepest sympathies to the family-he was a gem of a human and will be missed.

My condolences on the passing of Dennis. I knew Gale, Richard and Linda, his siblings. They were all good people. Gale took me to the hospital after I hit my head while swimming on the Moose Jaw river beach, where a local doctor sewed up my forehead. Richard and I went to Teacher’s College in Regina, and survived a car accident in Moose Jaw on South Hill in Gale’s lovely customized Mercury. I knew Linda in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. I also remember visiting the family home on North Hill.
