Muriel Louise Elliott
Muriel Louise Elliott (née: Hagglund), aged 82 years of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 18th, 2026, surrounded by her grandchildren.
Muriel was born on June 12th, 1944 in Melfort, SK to Estella and Atner Hagglund. She had one brother, Bill Hagglund. Muriel grew up in Melfort and later moved to Saskatoon, SK. She reminisced often of the days when bus rides were a nickel, allowing her to become independent and explore the City of Bridges. Muriel went on to have a successful career in medical transcription. She enjoyed the outdoors, cats, dogs, cooking and baking (and criticizing herself), and good conversation.
It was at the La Ronge Health Center that Muriel and her late husband Garry Elliott met. Muriel had moved in search of further opportunities. She had her headphones on, dictating, when Garry walked in and tapped her on the arm for her attention. She exclaimed with one of her famous Muriel screams (if you knew her, you know how jumpy she was!). Muriel and Garry eloped in Saskatchewan at a courthouse.
In 1969, on St. Patrick’s Day, they drove their Oldsmobile convertible to the Yukon. It was here that they built their own homestead. In 1973, they gave birth to their only child, Lee Ann Kathryn Elliott (Unrau). Together (quite literally) they built a cabin full of love, laughter, and elbow grease. Muriel was never scared of a tough job and also continued her medical transcription career in Whitehorse. After some time spent in the extreme cold, the family of three then moved to Kamloops, BC.
Muriel was known for her baking, her humour, and the connections she made wherever she went. To her grandchildren, she was affectionately known as “Gma”, famous for her matriarchal ways and cherry cheesecake.
Muriel is survived by her daughter, Lee Ann (Monty) and her grandchildren: Shanna (Lee), Taylor (Allan), Dallas (Kianna), Mack (Kobyn), Garry (Kenzi), and Zak (Sarah). She also passed knowing that she has a great-grandchild on the way.
The family would like to extend the warmest heartfelt thanks to staff and peers at Providence Place, Chateau St. Michael, and Maguire Center.
In keeping with Muriel’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
