Robert “Bob” George Alexander McKay

April 13, 1936 – December 13, 2019

Robert “Bob” George Alexander McKay, aged 83 years, passed away suddenly at the Regency Manor in Central Butte on Friday, December 13, 2019.  Bob was born on April 13, 1936 in Riverhurst, SK. He was predeceased by his son, Douglas McKay; parents, Robert and Mary McKay; mother and father-in-law, Jack and Lydia Weinbender; sisters, Gladys Eyres and Myrtle Metcalf; brothers: Robert “Norman” and Alfred in infancy, James and David “Bruce” McKay; and brothers-in-law, Gordon Eyres and John Metcalf.  Bob attended school at Log Valley. After leaving school, he worked as a farm hand for his father and other famers in the area. For two winters, Bob ventured to Vancouver, BC where he helped his brother-in-law, Gordon Eyres, deliver heating fuel. Bob met his true love, Maria Weinbender, while attending 4-H events. In 1959, he realized she was the one and they were married on November 25, 1960.  Bob and Maria began their married life living at Log Valley and later moved to their family farm south of Uren, SK. While on the farm Bob and Maria spent two winters in Herbert, SK, where Bob was a fuel truck driver for the Morse Co-op. Bob and Maria had four children: Deborah “Debbie” in 1961, Douglas “Doug” in 1962, Richard “Rick” in 1963, and Robin in 1977. Once the three older kids started school, Bob and Maria settled at their family farm where they spent 50 years grain farming and raising cattle.  During that time, Bob became a member of the school board, Chaplin Minor Hockey Association, and Wheat Pool committee in Chaplin, as well as a spare school bus driver. In fall of 2013, Bob and Maria retired to the Prairie Oasis Trailer Court in Moose Jaw, SK. When Bob’s health deteriorated in 2014, he was moved to the Regency Manor in Central Butte, SK. Bob loved farming but most of all he loved his cows. He enjoyed going to auction sales and cattle sales, especially Johnstone’s Auction Mart on Saturday, hockey games, and rodeos.  He cherished family gatherings and was so proud of each of his children and grandchildren, and attended numerous sporting events including figure skating, hockey, ball, and curling. In his final years, Bob enjoyed visiting with friends and family especially his grandchildren. He also could always be found playing cards and bingo at the Manor, watching Oiler games and curling on TV and providing his son, Rick, with various farming tips. There wasn’t a day that went by that Bob didn’t wonder how the crops were doing, and we know his passion for farming and cattle will continue from above.  Bob is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Maria; their children and families: Debbie (Greg), Danielle (Jared), Alexandra (Daniel) and Chance; Rick (Jeannine), Meghan (Robbie) and family, Brett, Madison; Robin (Derrick), Colton and Jaxon; daughter-in-law, Gaye, Dustin (Kahina), Lucas (Kathleen), Kasey (Carson); his brother, Gordon (Irene) McKay; sisters, Hilda Wishart and Sheila (Albert) Berger; sisters-in-law, Lynda (Henry) Seibel and Beverly (Ellis) Leaman; as well as many nieces and nephews.  The family of Bob McKay would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Regency Manor for the love, care and support they provided during his stay there. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Seaborg officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s name may be made to the Regency Manor Auxiliary, P.O. Box 40, Central Butte, SK S0H 0T0 or STARS Air Ambulance, 2640 Airport Road, Regina, SK S4W 1A3.  Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Michelle Surtees, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
