Robert “Wayne” Johnstone

Wayne was born May 11, 1939, in Moose Jaw and passed away July 29, 2024, at the Dr.  F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital.  He grew up on a farm southwest of Moose Jaw, attended Cobourg country school to grade 8 and then Moose Jaw Technical High School.  He received his Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1960.  In 1961 he attended the Reich American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, and then continued to auction and farm with his father.  In 1962 he married Dorothy (nee Schweitzer) following which time he purchased a milk truck and hauled milk for Johnstone Dairies for two years.  He continued farming and auctioning and became President of Johnstone Auction Mart Ltd., Moose Jaw, in 1968.  He continued management of the Auction Mart until the mid-2000’s, and then handed management over to his son, Scott, but continued in a PR position until his death.  He was also President and Director of the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company for many years, member of the Saskatchewan Auctioneers Association, life member of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, member of the Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan, member of the Moose Jaw Agricultural Society, played hockey in the Mercantile League and was a season ticket holder of the Moose Jaw Warriors until his passing.  Wayne and Dorothy enjoyed annual camping and ski trips, travelled with friends to Europe, Thailand, China, Mexican Riviera, and RVing to Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, including Tuktoyaktuk, and many US states and all Canadian provinces.  Wayne was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Betty Johnstone, Dorothy’s parents Jake and Carrie Schweitzer, and brother-in-law Garry Miller.  He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy, son Scott (Julie) of Moose Jaw, daughter Cathy (Scott) Donald of Regina and 4 granddaughters: Kaitlyn Johnstone (Tyler Thiessen) of Saskatoon, Camryn Donald (Carter Ramler) of Regina, Melissa Donald of Regina and Kirstie Johnstone of Moose Jaw, sister Char Francis of Moose Jaw, brother Bill (Lynn) Johnstone of Moose Jaw, sister-in-law Judy Miller (Gerry Schmidt) of Regina and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service for Wayne will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 15 Paul Drive, Moose Jaw, on Saturday, August 3 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Jason Schultz officiating.  For friends and family who are unable to attend you are invited to view the service virtually by going to: https://cattlevids.ca/2024/johnstonefuneral2024.html. Flowers are gratefully declined.  Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Dr.  F.H.     Dorothy, Scott, Cathy and Families; We were shocked and very saddened to learn of Wayne’s passing. He was such a great guy! Always enjoyed visiting with him whenever we met.     Dear Dorothy, Scott, Cathy and families,
    We are so saddened to hear of Wayne’s sudden passing. Wayne was a great guy to deal with and Clayton always enjoyed his phone chats with Wayne. I could always tell when he was talking to Wayne because there was nonstop laughing. He will be missed. We are sorry we will have to miss Wayne’s farewell as we are away, but we will be thinking of you.

    Inam saddened by Wayne’s passing.I always got to visit at the horse sales.The funeral was great.I was glad to get there as were many others.Dorothy,life has a big change now but you are so strong and have all your memories.I was very impressed with the childrens speaches and the way you all carry on.Take care.

    So very sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. My condolences to Dorothy, Scott, Cathy, and family. Wayne was my very first employer as a kid–I have so many fond memories of those formative years working for him on the farm and the auction mart. I’ll never forget him teaching me how to operate a rock picker, and electing me mayor of Archive. Such a decent and straight-dealing man. He was a pillar of the agriculture community and left a legacy.
