ROSE MARY HARTNEY

August 30th, 1950 – May 25th, 2023

Rose Mary Hartney aged 72 years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away on Thursday, May 25th, 2023.  Rose Mary was born in Regina, SK to Joseph L. and Madeleine (Nagle) Hartney.  She lived on a farm south of Drinkwater, SK until she began school at St Mary’s.  Thereafter she spent school days in Moose Jaw and weekends and holidays at the farm.  Rose Mary attended high school at Sion Academy and Vanier Collegiate, where she returned to teach English for 39 years, spending nearly 30 of those years as vice-principal.  She completed B.A., B.E.A.D., and Master of Education degrees at the University of Regina.

Rose Mary was a lifelong supporter of all things Moose Jaw.  She spent her life in service to others.  She attended Church of Our Lady for 66 years, assuming leadership roles in liturgy, parish council, CWL and pastoral care.  Rose Mary taught, advocated for, and guided the education of countless students.  She supported colleagues and the educational and athletic programs at Vanier and in the community.  For a non-athlete, Rose Mary served many years on the Moose Jaw High School Athletics Directorate.  She was the Academic Advisor for the Moose Jaw Warriors, chair of the Providence Place Foundation Board, and secretary of Moose Jaw Crime Stoppers, along with many other volunteer activities.  She provided care for her family and friends, particularly those in their declining years.  Her service was characterized by generosity, leadership, loyalty, and kindness.

Rose Mary will be missed by many friends and family.  She leaves brothers, John (JoAnne) Hartney and Tom Hartney; sister, Kathleen (Del) McDonald; nieces and nephews: Desmond (Heather) Hartney, Aliya and Brooks; Maire (Ryan) Coulthard, Quinton and Aislynne; and Kent (Mandy) McDonald and Mia; along with many treasured cousins.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 10th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of Our Lady, 566 Vaughn St, Moose Jaw, SK with Reverends Carlos Jimenez and Jake Ibay presiding.  Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.  Those not able to attend may view the service virtually by going to https://live.htcsd.ca/. As an expression of sympathy, contributions in Rose Mary’s memory may be made to Church of Our Lady Building Fund, Vanier Collegiate Scholarship Fund, or Providence Place Foundation.  She would also be pleased with a kind word shared, a ride given, or a good deed done in her memory.  Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane.  Andrew Pratt Funeral Director 306-693-4550

So sorry to hear of this great loss to so many friends, family and fellow citizens. I have great memories of Rosie in elementary school – even though I moved schools after only 2 years – and especially in all four years of high school. She was always the adult in the room but was also fun loving and enjoyable to be with. Her all too early demise is a great tragedy for her friends and community.

Rose Mary and I worked together many years ago when she was the academic advisor for the Moose Jaw Warriors and one of our St. Francis Xavier (Edmonton) high school students was playing with the Warriors. We communicated frequently over the course of those few years to ensure that our mutual student would not miss out on any credits needed for his high school diploma. I remember her as warm and kind. She always wanted the best for her students. John, Joanne, Desmond and family, I am so sorry for your loss.

Her corner of the world is emptier, but heaven is fuller! Miss Hartney was my high school English teacher and a rock to the school and church community. After having moved away from MJ, I always looked forward to the big smile and bright eyed reception from Miss Hartney when I came to Church of Our Lady with my mom. She was a constant presence and made the church feel like home.
She has helped our family in many ways over the years, especially when my mom was dying; she was there for us along with the team at church. May her soul through the Mercy of God Rest in Peace, and May Perpetual Light Shine upon her.
    We will miss you.
