MAJOR MARGARET FOLEY, Retired
Promoted To Glory
“Summoned home, the call has sounded,
Bidding a soldier her warfare cease …”
On Sunday, 22nd March 2026 at 5:18 p.m. Major Margaret Foley was Promoted to Glory and began to worship Jesus face to face. She had spent her life in service to God and The Salvation Army, and she knew exactly where she would go and what she would see when she got there.
Margaret was born January 9th, 1944 in Neepawa, Manitoba to parents Jim and Sylvia Foley. Her father, Jim, worked for the Canadian National Railway and the first years of Margaret’s life were spent in various CN water stops in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In about 1950, Jim’s posting took him to Yorkton, SK where contact was made with The Salvation Army and Marg became an enthusiastic Sunday School child. At the age of seven, she committed her life to Jesus and promised to love and serve Him for the rest of her life. Promise Kept! She became a Junior Soldier of The Army, and at age 14 in Portage La Prairie she became a Senior Soldier and her lifelong journey of service began.
By the age of 21 Margaret was commissioned a Lieutenant of The Salvation Army and the next 40 years saw her serve in appointments from British Columbia to New Brunswick that included Church pastoring, Seniors’ Residences, services to vulnerable new mothers, homeless women’s shelter, and Executive Director of The Salvation Army Agape Hospice in Calgary.
In every appointment, whether serving sandwiches to homeless persons, or meeting with wealthy donors, Marg always served everyone as if they were the most important person to enter her life that day.
Marg was blessed with two sisters, Elizabeth (Ned, deceased) and Sharon (Stretch, deceased), and three brothers: James Douglas (deceased), John (Carol), and David (Diane) – although it was never clear that she always thought it was a blessing. Marg was always the substitute parent and had the responsibility of caring for her siblings after her mother went to work. The family lived for several years in Winnipeg where there were cousins from the Leech, Scott and Hedley Foley families to provide instant friends and lots of love and laughter. She always regretted not having that same close connection with the Foreman cousins because they lived in Ontario.
In 2004 Marg retired to Moose Jaw, SK to be close to some of her family. Here she found post retirement employment and fellowship at the local Salvation Army church. She made friends instantly with almost everyone and “many called her blessed”. Even in recent years, she made lots of friends when living in places like Athabasca Tower, Fairview Apartments, and Mulberry Retirement Centre, and she enjoyed lots of fellowship with walking buddies in The Mall. When she realized that her time on earth was coming to a close, she looked forward with great anticipation to her new life in Heaven with her Saviour and loved ones gone before.
“Well done thou good and faithful servant …
enter now into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:23)
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 27th, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. at Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Most heartfelt condolences to all Marg’s family. I remember walking in the mall and seeing her every weekday early mornings. Such a nice lady. Rest in Peace.
You will be missed my friend of many years since being my pastor, friend and inspiration to our little corps of Tweed , Ontario. We have had many conversations some deep , some silly, but remembered always! Having met several members our family, and training with your brother John., you certainly were a great influence on every one of them. May you be resting comfortably in the arms of Jesus till we meet again! Love you Marg!
Foley Family: Special thoughts and prayers for you all at this time. We had the pleasure of knowing Marg 50 plus years ago in Moncton, NB and still have the Bible she gave us as a wedding present. May God’s Holy Spirit give you all a sense of Comfort and Peace. “Well Done, thy good and Faithful Servant of the Lord”. Fred and Lorraine Veysey
Marg, you were a good friend for over 60 years. Although we are happy that you are no longer suffering and in a much better place, you are deeply missed by your family and friends. Our condolences to John (Carol), David (Diane), Elizabeth and Sharon.
Sending our deepest and sincere condolences to the Foley Family. Major Marg was a faithful and loyal servant of God whom she served for many years. We will never forget her friendship during our time in Moose Jaw. Blessings!
We want to express our deepest sympathy on learning of Marg’s passing. However, we do not sorrow as one with no hope because we know that Marg has gone to be with Her Lord and Saviour in Heaven. What a glorious hope we have. She is Promoted to Glory! A faithful and loyal servant whose kindness we will always remember. She was a joy to know and appreciate her friendship and kindness during our tenure in the Prairie Division.
Dave and Diane- We extend our deepest sympathies at this sad time.
My sincere sympathies to Major Marg family. She was always so kind and compassionate to me after losing my mom ( Ruth Kober ) and then losing my husband. You will be missed.
May the angels lift you up to your spot in Heaven.
To John & Carol, David & Diane, Sharon, Elizabeth, & other family members, & Moose Jaw Corps family & Friends- Praying for you in these days with Marg’s Promotion to Glory I met Marg when she was stationed in Kamsack & I was in Yorkton. Psalm 91:1, 2 Major Brenda Holnbeck, Cobourg
Thinking of all of Marg’s family and friends today, especially Dave and Diane, and sending my sincerest condolences.
Marg was such a kind soul and a quiet and comforting presence. I always liked spending time with her and gleaning some of her wisdom. All of the communities that she was a part of will undoubtedly miss her dearly.
We didn’t have much time to get to know Margaret, just the short time that she lived here at Mulberry. Margaret joined the three of us at the breakfast table. We stated calling our little group the Breakfast Club. We each had our little job to do, whether it was to decide what kind of cereal, or do we have apple juice, or what is the outside temperature today. Everything was really low key and not serious, just a terrific way to start the day. Words can’t express how much we miss her. Our condolences to all the family. Shirley, Jean and Ann.
