Walter James “Wally” McCready
Walter James “Wally” McCready — known lovingly as Wally, Papa, and Slim — passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12th, 2026, at the age of 68 years in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, surrounded by his loving family, just as he would have wanted.
Born June 2nd, 1957, in Moose Jaw to Robert John “Bob” McCready and Mary McCready, Wally was an adored son and proud big brother to Sherry, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond that only grew in friendship and love as they did. From day one, Wally had a playful spark of mischief and a deep love for people. As a young man he filled his days with sports — football, hockey, and baseball — along with music, musical theatre, and spending time with friends who would eventually become lifelong companions and chosen family.
Following proudly in his father’s footsteps, Wally spent his career on the railroad with Canadian Pacific Railway. The job took him to different cities over the years, first as a young man chasing opportunity and later as a devoted family man building a life with those he loved most. No matter where the track took him, it was the friendships built that made each new city a home.
At the heart of Wally’s world was family. He married the love of his life, Cindy, beginning a love story that would span 45 beautiful years. Together they built a life filled with laughter, loyalty, and unwavering love. Travel became a highlight both early and later in life. Wally adored his daughters, Lyndsay and Shannon, and he was proud beyond measure to be a devoted “girl dad.”
But if you asked Wally, his greatest title was Papa. When Ava-Lee, Hudson, Kesler, Lilly, and Archer came into his life, his heart grew even bigger. He loved every moment with his grandbabies — cheering them on at their sports and activities, driving them wherever they needed to be, and listening closely as they told him about their days. Nothing made him prouder than the people they were growing into.
Wally had a rare way of making people feel special. When you spoke with him, you felt his warmth immediately — as if, in that moment, you were the most important person in the room. He was kind, loving, and selfless, and he carried a deep loyalty to both family and friends.
To those who knew and loved him best, Wally truly was “the best.”
He was predeceased by his father, Robert John McCready. Wally leaves behind his beloved wife, Cindy; daughters, Lyndsay (Cody) and Shannon (Derrick); his cherished grandchildren: Ava-Lee, Hudson, Kesler, Lilly, and Archer; mother, Mary McCready; sister, Sherry (Peter); and many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were brighter because of him.
Wally fought hard in his final chapter and faced it the same way he lived his life — with courage, grace, and the spirit of a warrior. His family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate medical staff who cared for him so thoughtfully.
Though he will be deeply missed, Wally’s love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family will live on in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A private family graveside service will be held with a celebration of life to follow in June. In lieu of flowers, please pay it forward as Wally would have – offer a ride (Wallycab), buy a coffee, or just lend an ear. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
