Bernice Ethel Sauro

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernice Ethel Sauro on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026.  She was 95 years young.

Bernice was born in Burlington, Ontario to her loving parents Victor and Alfreda New (née: Oats).  She was the third of four girls and grew up in Toronto, Ontario.  Her father was a Sgt. Major in the Canadian Calvary Brigade and served overseas during WW2; Alfreda remained and tended to the home and family.

Bernice met Livio Sauro when they worked together in a grocery store.  They married on a beautiful fall day in October 1953.  Together they raised six beautiful children, five girls and one boy.

Bernice moved to Moose Jaw, SK in 1977 where she established deep roots.  She made many friends and built a strong community here.  She enjoyed knitting, dancing, volunteering, and any excuse to meet with friends for tea.  At the age of 14, Bernice began her life-long love of knitting.  She would tell the story of how the first thing she knit; she made a mistake and put it down and never wanted to try again.  Her father made her pick it back up and fix her mistake, which encouraged her to keep going!  Thank goodness for that! Bernice went on to knit well into her 90’s for her children, grandchildren, and many others.  One of the items she was well known for was her knitted baby layettes complete with the capes.  Safe to say she made sure every one of her grandchildren was given one by their Nana.  Bernice also enjoyed attending any and all activities that involved her children and grandchildren.  She was our biggest supporter, proudest fan, and loudest cheerleader.  Her cheers will be missed.

Bernice was also known for her fearless adventurous side.  She loved camping, going to the cottage, and amusement parks (she could be heard on many rides throughout the park with her screams of pure joy!).  She loved to shop, host large gatherings, and feed everyone.  She loved to travel by any means she could, but later in life she loved a good road trip.

After her unfortunate house fire in 2023, Bernice spent her final years living with her daughter Lisa in Moose Jaw until her passing.  She often spoke of how lucky she felt to be so well cared for and loved in those years.  During her time there, she enjoyed visiting in person and on the phone, watching the squirrels in the feeders through the big picture window, enjoying her favorite game shows and solving her find a word books.  She was known to enjoy an ice cream bar (or two if no one was looking!).

Bernice was known for her selfless generosity, always wanting to take care of everyone, quick wit, hearty laugh, and perfectly timed sassiness.  Always particular about her appearance, Bernice loved a good Winners find; always smelling like White Diamonds and staying trendy with well-placed denim.  We are all so fortunate to have been loved and cared for by her for as long as she was ours.

She was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Alfreda New; sisters, Dorothy Davidson and Joyce Woolings; grandson, Brian Williamson; and great-grandson,Tyrus Ayerst  Bernice is survived by her sister, Carole (Gordon); children: Sandy (Kerry, Stacey, Amanda, Darnell, Joel and Kaylin), Brenda (Joe – Kinsie and Kayley), Cindy (Glenn and James), Cheryl (Pete – Scott, Jennifer, Jeff, Mike, and Steven), Lisa (Jessica, Karson, Kolton), and Darryl (Nicole – Kristopher, Kyle, Kameron, and Kendall); as well as 29 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Bernice’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 7th, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. in the Harvey Room at Moose Jaw Funeral Home.  Those not able to attend may view the service by going to www.moosejawfuneralhome.com/webcast/.  Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane.  Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550

Bernice was a valued part of my family’s story in the past, first as a caregiver and then as a friend. A lively, fun-loving lady, such a good person, a nice person. Her obituary describes her so well. Her family was special also, and I saw how close you were and how well you treated her. I am so very sorry.
