JAMES “JIM” MATHEW TRISKA
May 23rd, 1950 – January 22nd, 2026
James Mathew Triska, known to all as Jim and was a longtime resident of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, at Pioneer Lodge – Palliative Wing, in Moose Jaw, SK, at the age of 75 years.
Jim was born and raised in Assiniboia, SK. Although Jim was a very smart individual, he preferred to be a troublemaker as a youth. Following high school, he served in the Canadian Armed Forces Military Police (surprisingly), with postings in Val-d’Or, Quebec and Shilo, Manitoba.
Following the sudden passing of his father Gerald in 1975, Jim was honorably discharged and returned to the Assiniboia area to run the family farm for his mother Anne, which he did for 40 years. Early on, with a lot of help from the neighbors, he soon learned how to be an excellent farmer. Living in Mossbank, SK and later on in Assiniboia, Jim was a “suitcase” farmer until 1995, when he and Janice moved their mobile home to the farmyard between Limerick and Mazenod, SK. Living there meant so much to Jim.
Earlier in life, Jim tore up the roads with his 1969 GTO. An avid car guy and fan of anything with a Chevy small block in it, Jim was also an avid hunter and put thousands of miles on his Grey Truck tracking everything that moved. That same Grey Truck also went to all of Michael’s home and road hockey games, even in blizzards. He took Carla snowmobiling around in the yard, spending hours in the quonset while he was tinkering on things. They went camping, fishing, to Rebel games, and watched sports – especially curling and junior hockey. Jim was always known for being very particular about how his equipment was maintained and looked after. He was an avid curler for a while and had a lot of fun adventures with his rink. Following his father’s footsteps, Jim was also a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge. He could always be found in his regular spot at the Civic Center where he watched all the senior hockey games.
Jim loved to be outside. He enjoyed maintaining the yard, spending time with his dog Kate, the cats, scouting the local wildlife, and bird watching. When time allowed him to be away from the farm, Jim and Janice enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling. He always looked forward to the annual fishing trip up north “with the guys.”
He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Anne Triska; Janice’s parents, George and Eunice Ambrose and her brother, Elgin Ambrose. Jim is survived by Janice; his son, Michael (Sheila) and grandson Matthew; his daughter, Carla Proust (Allen) and grandchildren Berkley and Hudson; sister, Joan Cuevas (Alex) and nephews Derek and Mark; as well as Janice’s brothers and their families, Hilluary (Sally) and Russell (Julie).
Janice, Mike, and Carla would like to recognize the amazing support received during Jim’s Cancer journey – Dr. V. Carulei and Dr. B. Janzen, as well as the Allan Blair Cancer Center, Home Care, Palliative Home Care, Therapies, and Pioneer Lodge -Palliative wing staff.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Jim’s name may be made in support of wildlife or an animal shelter /SPCA of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Cara Ashworth, Shirese Noble Funeral Director 306-693-4550
