Mavis Eloise Leakey

January 10th, 1931 – November 16th, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Mavis Eloise Leakey (née: McRorie), at the age of 94 years, on Sunday, November 16th, 2025, in her beloved hometown of Avonlea, Saskatchewan.  Born on January 10th, 1931 to Vera and Cliff McRorie, Mavis was raised in Avonlea and grew up surrounded by a large, loving extended family.  She was predeceased by her brother, Lawrence and her sisters, Marian and Lynn.

After high school, Mavis graduated from Nursing School and dedicated many years of her life to caring for others.  On June 26th, 1954, she married the love of her life, Ray Leakey, and together they had four children: Darcy Tkatchuk, David Leakey, Darrell Leakey, and Dale Leakey.  Mavis was also a cherished grandmother to Meghan, Scott, Erin, and Dana, and a proud great-grandmother to Kate, Brayden, Maeve, and Summer.

Mavis and Ray’s life together was marked by adventure as they moved to Iraq in 1956, followed by Libia and the Southern United Staes.  Eventually they returned to Avonlea where hey raised their family and put down roots in their community.  Later their curiosity and love of the wider world called them onward once more as they moved with their two youngest children to Pakistan.  In time, they returned home again to Avonlea where they settled and remained.

A passionate and committed member of her community, Mavis was known for her work as a triage first responder nurse, even delivering a baby in a car once.  She worked for many years alongside her sister Lynn, served on city council, and was an active member of her church.

Mavis was known for her infectious sense of humour – her laughter could always be heard when she and Lynn were together – and her incredible storytelling.  Many people encouraged her to write a book about the many adventures she and Ray had over the years.  Mavis was also a prolific letter writer, and her heartfelt cards and letters were treasures to many.

Mavis loved Avonlea and the community she called home.  Her connections to family and friends were deep and she found great joy in the relationships she built throughout her life.  She was fortunate to have spent her final years living at home with her husband and their son Darrell, who cared for her lovingly and allowed her to pass peacefully in her home, surrounded by the warmth of her family.

A strong-willed, feisty woman, Mavis was a fierce advocate for others, much like her mother Vera.  Her broad mind, compassion, and strength made her a beloved figure in the lives of all who knew her.

Mavis leaves behind her devoted husband, Ray; their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many dear friends and extended family members.  She will be missed more than words can express.  Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of Mavis’ life will be announced at a later date (anticipated to be in the summer of 2026).  Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane.  Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
