Marjorie Isabel Spence
Marjorie Isabel Spence (née: Black) aged 101 years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away on Monday, November 17th, 2025.
Marjorie was born October 23rd, 1924 on a farm in the Tuxford, SK district to parents Eva and Clarence Black. She attended the local country school until her father’s passing in 1935. Marjorie and her mother moved into Moose Jaw to live with her aunt. She continued her education and graduated from Central Collegiate Institute in 1941. After high school she worked at Robin Hood Flour Mill. Marjorie then trained to be a Medical Laboratory Technologist under the supervision of the nuns at Providence Hospital. She continued to be a career woman working in Laboratory medicine throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba until she was introduced by a fellow Lab Tech to their brother Oliver Spence. Oliver and Marjorie were married July 8th, 1961 and she then began her next career as farm wife. Marjorie added the role of mother to her life as the first of their two children Kathy was born in April of 1962 and Jim followed in January of 1964. Oliver passed away in 1979, and Marjorie continued to live and support Jim on the farm until 1989.
Marjorie once again moved into Moose Jaw. She took on various activities such as working at a kitchen store and a yarn store but loved her role as a Volunteer at Providence Hospital. She took photos of the babies born at Providence Hospital for years. Once Providence Hospital closed, she moved her volunteer skills to Providence Place and continued her volunteer work until she was 87. Other activities included reading, card playing with friends, crosswords and books upon books of wordsearch puzzles. Marjorie became a grandmother in 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998. Always a talented knitter, Grandma provided baby sweaters and yearly mittens for her grandkids. She was always available to look after, feed, pick up and help out in any way. Her home on Simcoe Street became a regular after school meeting place and her yearly travels to Chicago created everlasting bonds with each grandchild.
Marjorie lived independently until 2017 when at 92 years old she moved to Mulberry Estates and then to West Park Crossing in January of 2023. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at The Arbor for their warm and attentive care of Marjorie.
She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver; and son-in-law, Sheldon. Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Kathy Belter; son, Jim Spence (Laura); and grandchildren: Sarah Swanson (Brett), Mitchell Belter, Thomas Spence (Keely), and Danielle Belter.
A graveside service will be held at a future date. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Andrew Pratt, Funeral Director 306-693-4550

We wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Marjorie on her passing. We knew Marjorie from her many years attending St. Andrew’s church . She was a beautiful soul who will be missed by all who knew her. A life well lived. We know you will cherish the happy memories you have of her. Take care.
To all of the Spence family,
We are sending condolences on the passing of Aunt Marjorie. She was a beautiful Auntie, and had such a happy countenance , big smile and the most musical voice you could ever imagine. She made you feel at home when we visited and was a gracious host. We loved our cousins and were so happy to have another Canadian connection. We loved her. She will be missed.

Had many wonderful conversations with your mom while she lived in my parent’s duplex!
Someone shared this poem with me when my mom passed away…
Forever
is a long time
to miss someone
Especially when
their absence leaves
such a lasting mark
on your heart
They say time
heals all wounds
But some absences
create such deep scars
in our hearts, that
time moving forward
only seems to
deepen our longing
Yet in this ache
there is comfort in
the small things ~
old pictures,
a familiar scent,
a song …
a connection that
existed on earth and
now in Heaven
To miss someone forever
is to keep a part of them
alive within us ,
to hold onto who they were
and what they meant to us
As life moves forward
you learn to carry
them with you,
not only in your thoughts
but in who you are
And so life goes on
New memories are made ~
Yet that special
place in your heart
always remains theirs
Forever is a long time,
but it also a testament
to the ever lasting
power of love
Until we meet again …

So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing, our condolences to you and your family.
Dear Kathy, Jim, Laura & family,
What a lovely tribute to your mom / grandma, a truly delightful person who lived a full and meaningful life. We have many fond memories of Marjorie over the years – as one of “the moms” when were growing up, a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Church, and a dedicated volunteer at Providence Hospital. Her smile and laughter, along with her quick wit, brought joy to all.
May you find peace and comfort in your own treasured memories of your mom / grandma.
With our sincere sympathy,
Gord & Lori Knight (nee Allcock)
So sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers.
Sorry to hear of the loss of your mother Kathy.
Our thoughts are with you.
Your mom was a bright light at West Park. Marjorie and my mom, Lynda, became instant friends and sat together for their meals. I called them the trouble makers and they loved it. She had a special gentleness and kindness about her. She is missed! My deepest condolences to you all.
