Towriss, Richard James
Richard James Towriss
July 4th, 1947 – October 22nd, 2026
Richard James Towriss, lovingly known as Rich, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22nd, 2026 at the Regina Pasqua Hospital at the age of 79 years, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Rich was born on July 4th, 1947, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Lewis and Margaret Towriss. He grew up on the family farm north of Moose Jaw in the Davie District, surrounded by family, where he developed a strong work ethic, a love of community, and values that would guide him through his life. On August 9th, 1969, Rich married the love of his life, Sandra Biggs. Together they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, laughter and countless treasured memories.
Rich attended school from Kindergarten through Grade 8 in the Davie District alongside his sisters and cousins before continuing his education at Peacock Collegiate, where he completed Grades 9 through 12. He then attended the University of Regina, SK for four years, earning his education degree and beginning a career that would shape the lives of countless students. Teaching was more than a profession for Rich; it was a calling. He dedicated 30 years to teaching in numerous schools throughout Moose Jaw, sharing his knowledge, patience and encouragement with generations of students. Following his teaching career, Rich kept himself busy operating a lottery kiosk, delivering newspapers, and driving taxi in his spare time. He was a hardworking man who always found ways to stay active and connected to his community.
Faith was also an important part of Rich’s life. He attended Mount Pleasant Church every Sunday while growing up and later attended Minto United Church. He was a proud member of the Early Bird Lions Club for several years, giving his time and support to the community.
Rich was a devoted Saskatchewan Roughriders fan and a loyal supporter of the Moose Jaw Warriors and Moose Jaw Miller Express Baseball Team. He was also an avid bowler and curler for many years enjoying friendships, camaraderie, and competition that came with both sports. He loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays games, curling and just about any other sport on television. His enthusiasm for sports was matched by his love for his family. He rarely missed an opportunity to attend his grandchildren’s activities, proudly cheering them on and celebrating their accomplishments.
Family was at the heart of everything Rich did. He loved organizing family picnics, bringing everyone together to share food, stories, laughter, and time with one another. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and became a caregiver to many friends and relatives throughout the years. His generosity, kindness and quiet dedication to others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Rich was predeceased by his parents, Lewis and Margaret Towriss; parents-in-law, Melvin and Florence Biggs; brother-in-law, Gerry Carline; and sisters-in-law: Linda Perry, Marsha McFarlane, and Faye Biggs. Rich will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 57 years, Sandra; children: Cory (Sarah) Towriss, Jaime (Al) Mann, and Sandi (Darren) Gray; and his beloved grandchildren: Kelci, Owen (Summer), Rylan, Slade, Daxton, Easton, Breckyn, and Kaden, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Gail Carline and Carol (Wray) Edmands; brother, Brian (Vicki) Towriss; brothers-in-law: Rodney Biggs, Don McFarlane, and Calvin Perry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Rich leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, compassion and love. Whether he was helping on the family farm, teaching in the classroom, cheering from the sidelines at a grandchild’s activity, organizing a family gathering, or lending a helping hand to someone in need, he made a difference in the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we will find comfort in the memories we shared, the lessons he taught us, and the love he gave so freely.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and to the nurses and doctors on the oncology ward at the Regina Pasqua Hospital for their kindness, compassion, and support throughout Rich’s journey. Your care and thoughtfulness during such a difficult time will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.
Rest peacefully, Rich. You will forever be loved, remembered and missed.
